Self-Assessment Tools

This set of self-assessment tools is designed to help commissioners and local health economies assess their progress in implementing key national policy. The tools are based on the components of the National Service Framework for Children, Young People and Maternity Services and other key policy documents.

The Self-Assessment Tools currently available are:

  • Acute Paediatric Services
  • Infant Mortality
  • NICE Neonatal Standards
  • Young People's Mental Health Transitions

The child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS), Disability and Maternity self-assessments have been archived as they no longer reflect current policy. However these are currently still available for download from the link below.

You can find out more about the tools below or follow the link to use the tool.

Acute Paediatric Services

These tools are for commissioners, clinical and managerial leads for acute children's services to assess progress against standards. They are based on the Royal College paediatric service standards. They cover Paediatric Surgery and Anaesthesia and Care of the Acutely Unwell Child.

Infant Mortality

This tool is for commissioners, clinical and managerial leads for child health and maternity services to assess progress against standards affecting infant mortality. It is based on the Implementation plan for reducing health inequalities in infant mortality: a good practice guide. This tool is an adaptation of the tool originally provided by ChiMat and the Children’s Service Mapping (CSM) programme which is no longer available following CSM’s closure on 31 March 2011.

NICE Neonatal Standards

This tool is for clinical and managerial leads in local neonatal units and neonatal networks to assess progress against the NICE standard for specialist neonatal care to help ensure that physical, psychological and social needs of babies and their families are at the heart of all care given.

Young People’s Mental Health Transitions

This tool is designed to help commissioners and providers of both CAMHS (child and adolescent mental health services) and AMHS (adult mental health services) assess how good their current transitions planning is and identify what steps they need to take to improve. It can be used by individual organisations, partners and local areas to improve their transitions planning.

It is one of a number of resources developed by the National CAMHS Support Service (NCSS) and partners to help improve the outcomes and process of mental health transition for young people. See our CAMHS Transitions Hub for access to these and other key resources.

The content of the tool is based on work by the Health and Social Care Advisory Service (HASCAS), further refined by colleagues in the East Midlands and informed by the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) Practice Enquiry. It includes references to good practice.
