  • Description: Three reports published this month highlight the continuing failure to provide adequate health care for prisoners and young off enders in the UK. Health services are found to vary in quality, and concerns are raised about access to appropriate primary and specialist care, particularly for those with mental health disorders. Commissioning healthcare in prisons is a joint report by the Healthcare Commission (which is responsible for assessing the performance of health-care organisations in the National Health Service and in the independent sector), and by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Prisons (which reports on conditions for and treatment of those in prison, young-off ender institutions, and immigrationremoval centres).
